Literature Text
to know what it means
when I find your bones
in another's jaw.
when excuses are frequent flyers,
dimly lit with muted nods,
lazing softly into expectation.
to know what it means
when I search for bearings
along the slatted wood walls
and find instead,
memories in
a clotted rope
poignant as the milk-white bottom of your tea cup
a faded amazing grace-
notes like pinching, tinny flies
that circle and pulse until
the light goes
-and they must pixillate and scatter.
to know what it means
when I taste earl grey
at the base of my throat,
steadfast and perpetual as
the hidden statuette
my forgotten warrior
that your mother found
ever at attention
upon your desk.

All Up and Down the Coast
All Up and Down the Coast
The weather ballons have shut down
out of boredom. The sky is the exact opposite
of an exploded circus. I'm feeling let down,
thinking I would miss you more.
Puddles are even leaving town
in search of something more famous to reflect.
I could go for a walk through the streets
you've left behind but I know they will someday
open up, swallow everyone who trusted them.
I think I will stay inside instead
and rummage through empty wine bottles,
hoping to disturb some hungover genie
and ask him if he's ever had any wishes of his own,
maybe a pleasant sunny day to himself
on top of a water tower,
some grap

when the emperor qin shi huang ling of china was dying
he ordered hundreds of thousands of terracotta soldiers to be buried with him
to guard him against the terrors of the afterlife
while in xi'an I bought a tiny reproduction of one of the soldiers
and gave it to my Robert for Christmas last year
.may it protect and comfort you until I can take it's place, my love.
